I write this a couple of days after the horrific attacks in NY and Washington D.C., and after reading a previous vitriolic entry in this guestbook. We are all feeling pain, anger, and disillusionment. This is not a question of religion or race. To my Islamic friends- remember that we are with you. All civilized people suffer the pain of what has happened, with no regard to religion. I, for one, will not be made to hate the innocent. Our peace, our love, and our strength will bring our communities to a better place. Peace to all. -Bill

I liked the article that talked about Islam and violence. I knew that Islam would not want violence. Of course I know that in any religion there are different people who intrepret their religion different but when you go back to the basics then violence is back. I liked how he worded the article to include many different versions of violence and to show that either way that Islamic Law prohibits it. Have a Great Day!

Thank you for your web site. You must also get your thoughts on television and in the newspapers. You must must protest loudle these horrors. There are unjust predjudices being formed against you. You must get together with other religious leaders and form a united front. I cannot descibe the pain I feel for all that is happening. In these horrible times there is a great need for the true word of Islam to be known. So many people will now associate your "kind and temperate" religion with the disturbing and inhumane interpretation that is being shown through the actions of terrorists and what is happening to women and the destruction of the statuary in Afghanistan. I came to your site to understand more of what Islam was. It was as what I have read in the past... another good road in the path to what God is. I apologize for any pains that you feel from people whose emotions are ruling their thoughts and actions. This only increases the saddnesses of the times. Hal Leader

I was horrified by one entry in your guestbook (about killing Arabs). We are so lucky to be in this country and we need to all pull together in peace and love of one another, regardless of race, religion, etc. I stumbled across this site in order to learn a little more about the Islam religion. I am a Christian, and strongly believe in that, which teaches us to love EVERYONE. My heart goes out to any Muslims that are being mistreated by ignorant people. Their mentality is similar to that of hte terrorists.

It is difficult to find real information about Islam and Arabs. I also appreciate this site for offering thematerial it offers; other sources, such as high school text books seem to be filtered for a less than accurate and a mildly perjorative view of Islam and Arabs. As for killing Arabs, please no that such killers will have to kill me first, where one innocent Arab life is threatened, and i can obstruct the killing. It may be, however, that military action is a fair tool - witness that our destruction of Hitler's Germany was horrendous, but we built them back in a significant way. If we do something destructive in the middle east, can we not enrich the Middle East, likewise? a

I hope this may help undo even just a little of the damage being done in the aftermath of the unspeakable terrorist strikes in the United States. Some Muslim people are being verbally or physically abused by a handful of hotheads who are acting out of anger and fear. These people represent the worse of our society and not the huge majority of Americans. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive them. If one of the outcomes of events is that we draw closer together through mutual understanding, peace and respect, there may indeed be a silver lining even to this tragedy. -- Please accept my condolences for looses you are experiencing in the wake of this tragedy. Sufism has intrigued me since intro to Gurdjieff many years ago. Found myself wondering what "Sufis" would say about recent events (Mullah Nasruddin in a teaching tale perhaps). Then read an article on MSNBC describing "Sufis" who lead radical schools in Pakistan. Description of countenance sounds like it could've been Hazrat Khan, but ideas sound more like Genghis Khan. The cliche says, "All good things must come to an end." Has Sufism degenerated,or are there numbers--as in Christianity--who call themselves Sufis now though have no connection to the esoteric? Thank you for any references/response.

Bonnie from , , US whose e-mail address is has this to say--

Dr. Godlas, Thank you for this very informative website. Many people of all religions are searching for the truth in these matters of "true" Islamic beliefs. It is a shame that one extremist group (ObL/terrorists)can cause so much hatred and confusion and predjudice. This is America, where we are free to worship each in his own way and to follow our own God. This is the beauty of the country we live in! And though I do not agree with every aspect of your views, I truly RESPECT what you believe and your traditions. I am a Christian, and I love you, as my God loves you. I have enjoyed the education here. But one thing (since you asked) you might want to consider is that you would not "lump" us all together (Christians) as having all the same behaviors. There appears to be a stereotypical view, on the family issues, raising children, sex education and other pages here. Respectfully, Dr. Godlas, not all Americans who call themselves Christians really are. Many Americans profess one thing, and live another. Just as not all of the Islamic faith actually practice all of the teachings of the Qu'ran. Actually I was offended by some of the comments that were made on these pages. Also, I was surprised to find that many of our values are the same! But they are not presented that way here. In my family, personally, we encourage abstinence until marriage with our children, do not let them dress provocatively, or date until they are of an age of maturity to handle it. Even then, it is with supervision until they prove their maturity and we know they have been properly taught and will adhere to the limits we have established according to Biblical teachings. We too, do not approve of the sex ed teachings in the public schools. In fact we have kept them out of those class times. And in a way, we do have "arranged" marriages in the way you approve of. We point out young men and women that we feel might be appropriate (in our view) for them to date. We encourage friendship between them. And we also "drive away" those we don't approve of and forbid our children to associate with them. We do our best to not allow them to be exposed to pornography. And it is a very difficult, time consuming task as you know. I could go on... But Please understand that while you profess to be promoting peace, and you don't want to be unfairly judged (as a group) neither do we. We ought not to judge eachother as categories, we should not judge eachother at all to give the impression that one group is better than another because of this or that. We are individuals and we will be judged as individuals by God. You can be the best parent on earth, but your children will not be judged (by God) based on your actions and choices, but by theirs. Both the Bible and the Qu'ran teach this, do they not? I would invite you to my home, if I met you. I would get to know you, as an individual, and you me if you would allow. And we would both judge for ourselves if we approved of eachother. Some matters of behavior are of great importance, some of lesser. But if we discovered that there were no great thing that devided us, or that offended the other, would you reject me as a human being just because I am not of your faith? I do wonder this after reading some of the writings here. Certainly we would not worship together, but can we live together in the same "community" without such division as is indicated here? You refer to your community and the Christian community as being so separate. Honestly Dr.Godlas, I don't understand how such blatant divisions promote peace. Sincere respect, Bonnie

Abdurrahman from Marrakesh, , Morocco 4000 whose e-mail address is alcmarr@wanadoo.net.ma has this to say--

Dear Dr. Godlas, There is no doubt that your site is the place to start on the internet for information about Islam and related subjects. We very much appreciate the current links to Western Muslims who have articulated why the attacks in New York are horrendous deviations from the essential teachings of Islam. I can assure you that the overwhelming feeling here in Morocco is one of sadness and repulsion at this violence. People here, just like people in America, crave peace and equilibrium. My only request would be that the photo which is now on the home page and which is so painful to see can soon be removed. To Bonnie, the Christian, may I say in all respect: know that the Quran affirms that "Those who are closest to those who believe in (the message of Islam) are those who say, 'We are Christians,' because among them are those who have dedicated their lives to God, and they are not proud. And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you will see their eyes overflowing with tears..." (The Chapter of the Table) Humility is the main virtue which should link Muslims and Christians and those of other religions. The Quran also affirms "And the servants of the Most Merciful God are those who walk upon the earth humbly and when the ignorant call out to them, they answer, 'Peace'." And this is the essential message of Islam, summed up in the Quranic verse, "And God calls unto the House of Peace and leads whomsoever He wills to a straight path." This House of Peace is first in the heart, then on earth, and finally, hopefully, in eternity. I sincerely believe this website echoes that Call in all its dimensions. Many blessings and much peace. Abdurrahman, Marrakesh

An excellent site--thank you for putting so much together on the educated US Islamic community's response to the atrocities of September 11. After seeing so much about the wide-spread support Bin Ladin has in the Arab world, their articles bring some comfort to see their expressions of strong condemnation. The news seems to be substantially slighting this viewpoint in favor of those who stop just barely short of saying the attacks were justified by the US policy of support to Israel and policy toward Iraq. One gets the impression they have been silent who do condemn it wholeheartedly. I see from the links on your site that impression is wrong--it's just under-reported.

The problem with you web site is it only tells the good side of Islam. I freely admit there is much to admire. But it is dishonest to leave out the many negatives about Islam, negatives that are accepted as fact by its followers. For starters Muhammed killed people, both during battle and after conquering them. I find it inconcievable that God needed to kill people to spread his message. Muhammed had 11 wives, one of them 9 years old, this 600 years after God had taught that a man should be the husband of one wife (christian teaching). Muhammed had the Jewish men of Banu Quaish killed and the women and children sold into slavery. These are just a few of the things recorded in Islamic history to be true of Muhammed. God would never have used such a man as his messenger. Why aren't these things on your web site. Also, archeological findings and modern investigation throw doubt on the party line of the perfect preservation of the Koran, and even question the biography of Muhammed. The earliest known Koran was not written until 150 years after Muhammed died? Fragments of a Koran found in Yemen show differences between it and modern versions. Excavations of early mosques show they were not built facing Mecca. Scholars who do this kind of work do so at great risk, remember Salmon Rushdie, there are many others who did not enjoy the same publicity or the same levels of protection from adherents of this 'tolerant' religion. Also, in Islam people like Mullah Omar have as much authority as any other religious figure. Why doesn't he have the authority to call for a jihad against America? Certainly he can cite verses from the Koran that will inflame hatred against Christians, 9:29 comes to mind. Would God really put such hateful verses in his holy scripture. You can't find such verses inciting to hate and war in the New Testament. And finally what about Sharia. Please explain Sharia to your readers.

Sarah from Atlanta, GA, USA 30096 whose e-mail address is Sarah@rebelrunner2112.com has this to say--

I am overwhelmed with the magnitude of information on your site. As a Muslim, this is a very confusing time for me. I question whether it is the terrorists or the vast majority of peaceful and loving Muslims who are practicing the true essence of the faith. Aren't the so-called "moderate" or "liberal" Muslims practicing a very diluted, watered-down version of the religion? If we all followed every aspect and teaching of the Koran, we would live like the Taliban. Is it really them who is doing the (mis)interpreting, or is it the rest of us, who are capable of evolution and enlightenment, who pick and choose how to follow the Koran? And how about Mohammad? Muslims are taught to blindly love Mohammad, without questioning his character. But if we were to dare question, would we really clamor to live as the Prophet did? Would we really find him very virtuous? I ask my questions with sincerity. I would appreciate polite insight from Muslims and non-Muslims. My email address is Sarah@rebelrunner2112.com

I love your site, I refer to it again and again. I was introduced to you about three or fours years ago by Azam Nizamuddin at the MiladunNabi program at University of Illinois at Chicago. But I do have one objection to the stuff about 09/11 on the site. I strongly condemn the cold and senseless killing of so many innocent human beings and I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering of the Families. But still, I cannot accept pointing of fingers towards Muslims without providing conclusive evidence and following the same standard of justice towards all Human beings whether they be Americans or not. This was an opportunity for the USA to show its best face to the world and reach out the Muslims but again it seems we are trying to teach the world violence and power are valid and acceptable means of forcing others to accept our point of view. May God forgive me if I am wrong on this issue.

Assalam o alaikum, nice site, atleast u've tried to represent the Muslims, which is, in the present scenario, a dangerous job itself. I saw there were some articles about the 11th Sept. stuff, and u've gathered those articles stressing how majority of Muslims condemn whatever some lunatics did on that day. True, as it is, and true it be, that those were barbaric acts, but I would appreciate it if u could also include some things about how badly the US and the Europe, particulary UK, has treated Muslims, how they continuously support and r part of the more barbaric acts against Muslims in Kashmir, Afghanistan, Palestine, Chechnia and in Iraq and all the Muslim countries by continuosly supporting their corrupt governments, just to be able to use 'em for their own intrests. Muslims r ready to sentence, bin Laden a terrorist, a villain, as long as they have the freedom to say what US is, a terrorist, a villain!!!! Thanks May ALLAH bless all of us
